Traditionally, Ethiopian silversmiths hand make their jewellery using the lost wax method. The designed piece is moulded with wax, encased in clay and left in the sun to dry. Hot metal is poured into a hole at the top of the casing, melting the wax inside and taking its shape. The cast is broken to retrieve the jewellery after the metal has cooled. This necklace is cast from an Ethiopian antique trinket, sourced from a market in Addis Ababa and created using the lost-wax method in brass. It is dipped in 22k gold and strung on a nylon chord with gold plated beads.
