The WPA's large-scale program involved the production of workwear for blue-collar workers. It was made in sewing rooms called "sewing rooms," and garments were tagged with "Made by WPA SEWING ROOMS, NOT TO BE SOLD." In states with sewing rooms, seamstresses took great pride in their work and declared the initials "WPA" to stand for "We Patch Anything." They sometimes repaired and adapted military clothing to create new garments worn by WPA workers. The designs and sewing techniques of WPA garments are fascinating. Their designs were based on military workwear, with many adaptations. True to the name "sewing room," the sewing techniques frequently used a lock stitch rather than the backstitch, which was the norm for workwear at the time.
