Barney—not Barbie—is also fashion’s newest darling. You may have first read that here, and it may be the last time you see Barney and fashion in the same sentence, but just hear me out.
Remember Haider Ackermann’s SS23 haute couture collectsion for Jean Paul Gaultier? For me, not only does this collectsion mark a turning point in contemporary fashion’s trajectory toward an updated chicness, but it proposes some curious colors to be considered with fresh eyes. The cult French-Colombian designer presented strong silhouettes mostly in neutral tones, yet always interspersed with an assortment of bold hues. While it’s no secret that neutrals highlight line and form, color is the secret ingredient that makes a garment come to life. Unsurprisingly, recent shows follow Ackermann’s lead in a return to the school of silhouette and captivating cut, and they’re mixing in splashes of Kelly green and Crayola purple.
Truthfully, purple and green were colors I always steered clear of—they reminded me of costume-y ’80s frocks at the back of a vintage shop. So when I saw Ackermann’s amoeba-like gown, voluminous yet dynamic, glide down the runway in Crayola purple, I almost couldn’t trust myself—why did I immediately desire the bold hue in my wardrobe?! To feel chic?!
The answer is yes, and it’s the same story with Kelly green. Of course, Bottega Veneta famously adopted the color years before the other luxury heavyweights, but Ferragamo (in my humble opinion) did it best for their recent SS24 show.
