Your home is an extension of yourself, reflecting your style, personality and passions. And just like your personal style, it takes time to develop and is never really โdoneโ (itโs unlikely your home today is decorated in the same style as your bedroom at 16). As you grow up, your humble abode becomes less of a crash spot and more of your sacred sanctuary. Itโs the place you happily go to after that long day at work, the only place that makes you somewhat comfortable when youโve got a fever of 103ยฐF, the place you can proudly walk around wearing no pants. The way you decorate, position furniture, and direct lighting are all paramount when it comes to making a house, apartment, loft, you name it, into a home โ your home.
We caught up with five of our favorite creatives to ask them how theyโve cultivated their interior style. With varying lifestyles, their individualities echo throughout their homes in everything from a vintage Hans Wegner-style rocking chair to an abundance of organizational shelves. Scroll on for a peek into five totally Instagram-worthy homes.
Erin Perez Hagstrom is the woman behind the lifestyle blog Calivintage, where she writes about style, decor, and food, in addition to documenting the restoration and renovation of her 1920s storybook cottage in Southern California. With two little ones, ages one and three, she and her partner have been slowing working on the place since they moved in two years ago. As their first home, it has become a creative experiment to work on together.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERIOR STYLE? My main goal is to make my home feel very casual and comfortable since we've got young kids. We really do live in this space and we need to change and adapt [the space] over time as the kids grow older, so I try to find versatile furniture that isn't too precious. It's a mix of vintage pieces from different eras along with newer items and even some DIY projects when I can't find what I'm looking for. We use a lot of plants โโ yes, we have a ton of giant bird of paradise plants! I'm also guided by the Montessori method, so I'm also always arranging things so that they can be safe and accessible for the kids.
WHATโS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR HOME? My vintage Hans Wegner-style rocking chair. We had one in the house where I grew up as a kid, so it's very nostalgic for me.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BUY NEXT FOR YOUR PLACE? Right now I'm fine-tuning what I want in terms of decor. I think I want to add a built-in shelf for the living room, so I'm on the hunt for unique objects like large scale pottery or art pieces.
Eric Holbreich, designer of lifestyle brand House of 950, has lived in his West Village apartment for the past five years with his brother and lots of plants. The bright, open space is not only his home but also his studio where he designs and sews his slow fashion collectsion.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERIOR STYLE? Lived-in. I definitely like for everything to be put away, but it doesnโt have to be so perfect. I like it to be home-y and inviting. It is filled with pictures of my family, art and objects I have collectsed throughout the years.
WHATโS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR HOME? I love this ink drawing hanging above my bed given to me from my grandma. Itโs Reuben Nakian โVeda and the Swanโ and I think it is absolutely beautiful โโ it reminds me of her.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BUY NEXT FOR YOUR PLACE? I want more shelving units! I love organizational tools and Iโm obsessed with The Container Store and Muji, I always make an excuse to buy something at those stores. Also, I want to get a dog and or cat for the place too!
Digital entrepreneur Puno Puno is the founder of I Love Creatives, a platform for connecting creatives, as well as the Instagram marketing tool PeopleMap and Made With Map, a platform for discerning travel influencers. On top of that, she is easily one of the funniest vloggers we know. Puno lives in downtown Los Angeles right in the Fashion District with her husband Daniel and their cat MuadโDib. Their apartment sits above all the fabric stores and is not only their home but their office. Super inspired by the space, they decided to go all out with the interior โ youโll see what we mean.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERIOR STYLE? Neu Tropical! I love colors and textures from the modern designs and playful vibes of the tropics. We're in DTLA and we're lacking in palm trees so we figured why not make use of these epic windows? Plus, the Flower Market is down the street.
WHATโS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR HOME? That coral sofa. We got it custom made and I bought the fabric at a store a block away. After pulling a dozen swatches of beige, I went with coral the last minute. It was SO coral when it arrived I was really worried haha. Fortunately, the plants tamed the coral beast and now I couldn't imagine our place without it.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BUY NEXT FOR YOUR PLACE? Oh lordy, I've got endless "did you forget this in your cart" emails. Haha! I'm always on the hunt for dining chairs. We host a ton of dinners at our place and I want something super comfortable that swivels.
Kirstyn Kรถnig is a contemporary dancer and social influencer living in Vancouver, BC. Weโre big fans of her day-to-day personal style, so we knew her home would be just as good. Situated just steps away from Vancouverโs beautiful seawall, Granville Island and the South Granville galleries and shops, her loftโs location is kind of gold mine. Bright and airy, it has become her sanctuary โ her place to reset and recharge.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERIOR STYLE? As the daughter of an architect, I have a deep rooted passion for design, art and architecture. My parents' love for minimal and Scandinavian design has certainly rubbed off on my own interior style and I love mixing vintage, classic and modern pieces together, as well as different price points.
WHATโS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR HOME? Probably the vintage photographs of my parents. One piece that does stand out, and I had my eye on for a long time, is my bench, by local Vancouver company Bocci. I was thrilled when I finally brought this piece into my space. It's one of the first things you see when you walk into my home.
Additionally, I'm a bit of a crazy plant lady, with 20+ plants, and am always on the hunt for new, unique and hard to find varieties to add to the family.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BUY NEXT FOR YOUR PLACE? When it comes to furniture and design, I have the same philosophy as I do with fashion, which is investing in timeless pieces vs. the disposable fashion concept. Over the past few years I've been trying to slowly replace my IKEA furniture with higher-end pieces.
The next purchase I'll be making for my loft is a new bed. I've been eyeing a simple platform bed from either Floyd or Blu Dot.
Tanya Sheikh is the co-owner of In Support Of, a boutique and showroom in New York City. Tanya has lived in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn for11 years, and in her current apartment for three of those years. As a quieter neighborhood with a family vibe, her abode is the place she goes to tune out after work, cook, read and simply enjoy.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR INTERIOR STYLE? My style is pretty minimal, with pops of color and texture. I bring color in mainly with my Persian rugs, art and plants.
WHATโS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR HOME? My antique Persian rug in my โliving room.โ My parents own a rug store in Northampton, MA called Zephyr Rugs and I had my eye on it for a very long time and then one day when I was home visiting they gave it to me as a gift to show me how proud they were of me starting my own business.
Each rug and piece of art is sentimental to me and represents a special moment in my life.
