Ocean Signal Flag Apron

What if we made an apron out of the flags used for ships? The original flags each had an alphabet letter on them and were used to express words by matching the letters together. Puebco wanted to take something with an extraordinary purpose and turn it into an ordinary, practical item. The design was inspired by cast iron parts made to connect ropes securely without coming undone. Recreating this dynamic yet delicate detail led to the development of this item. Cloth was selected to resist fading while still evoking the feel of a flag. It was difficult to match the quality of the original cast iron parts, so aluminum was used instead. While less sensitive than cast iron, it made the piece lighter in weight. The final product emerged from the tension between reproducing the original and developing something new.
