Last month, The Row sent people (us) into a frenzy over their sculptural chignons held by hair pins and combs at Paris Fashion Week, ushering in a new era for accessories. With just the twist of the wrist, these U-shaped pins can create a range of styles, from polished buns to messy updos. The epitome of French-girl effortless chic.
We enlisted Seattle-based hair and permanent makeup artist Courtney Mony to assist in learning how to perfect the pins. And while there's a bit of a learning curve, it's remarkably easy to get the hang of. Follow her instructions and recreate these looks, below.
"To create a classic bun, start by pulling your hair into a low ponytail. Then, twist upwards and around two to four times (depending on your hair thickness). Angle your hair pin through the middle of the bun, then turn it upwards and push down through the top of the bun to secure."
"If doing a chignon, start with a low ponytail, then twist your hair up the back, keeping it close to your head. Position the prongs of your hair pin upward at a diagonal, then push into your hair and twist down to tighten."
"To use a stick barrette (the circular ring with a pointed pin), twist your hair into a low bun, keeping the ends at the top of the bun. Position the ring over the top, then weave the pin in and out of your hair, sandwiching it between the pin and ring."
"Experiment using multiple pins or trying half-up styles. And don't worry if it isn't perfect—half the fun of using hair pins is trying a look and letting the results surprise you."
